The Town of Cutler Bay is now weighing two different options for a new High School program within the town boundaries. Along with looking into a Charter High School, the Town of Cutler Bay and the Miami-Dade Public School system (MDPS) have begun discussions about turning Centennial Middle School into a 6 through 12 public High School. Centennial Middle School is currently under-enrolled and could accept an additional 600 students.
This New Development in the town’s quest to give residents additional educational choices was just announced at the September 6th budget meeting and there are many details to be ironed out.
Just this year, Centennial began a new magnet program for incoming 6th graders. The Centennial Ocean Academy of Science & Technology (COAST) program offers courses emphasizing four aspects of marine and environmental education in South Florida. This program is expected to expand to additional grades.
Preliminary discussions for the Centenial High School option are to offer an International Baccalaureate program, an I-Prep academy, and an Environmental Science academy. This joint venture between the town and the school board and may require a monetary commitment by the town. How much of a commitment is still being negotiated.
A Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 13th at 7pm. The Mayor and council hope to be able to update the community about this new development at that time and provide additional details. Town Hall is located at the Cutler Bay Town Center Building, 10720 Caribbean Blvd..
We encourage everyone interested in the future of education within our community to attend this very important meeting.
Below are some informational links. These links are provided to give an example of similar programs, but with details still up in the air, they may or may not be accurate examples of what may be offered at Centennial.
