Cutler Bay Considers 2 High School Options – Meeting on Sept. 13th

The Town of Cutler Bay is now weighing two different options for a new High School program within the town boundaries. Along with looking into a Charter High School, the Town of Cutler Bay and the Miami-Dade Public School system (MDPS) have begun discussions about turning Centennial Middle School into a 6 through 12 public High School. Centennial Middle School is currently under-enrolled and could accept an additional 600 students.

This New Development in the town’s quest to give residents additional educational choices was just announced at the September 6th budget meeting and there are many details to be ironed out.

Just this year, Centennial began a new magnet program for incoming 6th graders. The Centennial Ocean Academy of Science & Technology (COAST) program offers courses emphasizing four aspects of marine and environmental education in South Florida. This program is expected to expand to additional grades.

Preliminary discussions for the Centenial High School option are to  offer an International Baccalaureate program, an I-Prep academy, and an Environmental Science academy. This joint venture between the town and the school board and may require a monetary commitment by the town. How much of a commitment is still being negotiated.

A Town Hall Meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, September 13th at 7pm. The Mayor and council hope to be able to update the community about this new development at that time and provide additional details. Town Hall is located at the Cutler Bay Town Center Building, 10720 Caribbean Blvd..

We encourage everyone interested in the future of education within our community to attend this very important meeting.

Below are some informational links. These links are provided to give an example of similar programs, but with details still up in the air, they may or may not be accurate examples of what may be offered at Centennial.

Town Hall Meeting Aug 18th to Discuss Cutler Bay Charter School

For years residents with school aged children have debated what to do once their kids reach High School. For most, their children attend Southridge. But as many people are aware, the Southridge High Schools Accountability Grade from the State has fluctuated between a “D” and an “F” for the past 5 years. Because of this, some residents are hesitant about sending their children to Southridge, electing instead to try magnet schools, pay for private schools or even consider a move elsewhere in the hopes of a better education.

The Town Council of Cutler Bay understands these concerns and in early 2010 a town Charter High School Committee began meeting to study the possibility of getting a High School within our town limits. In addition, town representatives have meet with Miami-Dade County School representatives and have paid for a feasibility study that looks into whether or not a Charter High School is an attainable goal.

On August 18th at 7pm the Mayor and Town Council will hold a town hall meeting to discuss whether you want the town to move forward in pursuing a Charter High School for the Town. Please make plans to attend this very important meeting. Town Hall is located at 10720 Caribbean Blvd..
